Radical educational theorist Paulo Freire, the so called Che Guevara of education, labeled this method as the "banking system of education" .
The traditional form of education can simply be described as one in which the teacher ?deposits? pre-defined knowledge into the students? brains, thus preparing the students to accept a passive role in society, integrating dehumanized beings into the powerful social apparatus.
It goes without saying that the banking concept of education regards students as adaptable, manageable beings. The more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness which would result from their intervention in the world as transformers of that world. The more completely they accept the passive role imposed on them, the more they tend simply to adapt to the world as it is and to the fragmented view of reality deposited in them.
In this sense, the banking system of education, which has ruled our educational system since its inception, is a mere act of oppression. Nevertheless:
"Authentic thinking, thinking that is concerned about reality, does not take place in ivory tower isolation, but only in communication. If it is true that thought has meaning only when generated by action upon the world, the subordination of students to teachers becomes impossible.?
Freire believes in the idea of active education.
Freire argues that in order for students to gain knowledge, to be truly educated, they must be liberated. The educational system must change. In place of the banking system, Freire advocates an education system that ignores the traditional student-teacher relationship and creates a reciprocal relationship between the two -  the student also teaches, and the teacher also learns. No longer can a student be subordinate to a teacher. Instead, students must learn how to enact change upon the world.
